Background of Dharavi Survey

Mumbai is a financial capital of India with population of approximately 15 million. Over 60% of its citizen stays in over 2000 slum pockets across the city. Dharavi is one of the biggest slum pockets in this metropolis where nearly 60,000 slum families/ establishments occupy major portion of 239 hectare of area in a compact settlement pattern. Dharavi is a triangular area between Mahim creek to the North, Western and Harbour Railway lines to the West and Central Railway line to the East. Most of the land is owned by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

Location of Dharavi

Part of it is owned by Railways, MHADA, State Government, Kabarastan, Mahim Natur Park and by private land owners. Dharavi Gaothan / Koliwada are places where the original Koli community lived. MCGM has their staff colonies particularly in Sector I. Kumbhars had received vacant land Tenure for pottery work by the corporation in 1930’s. Number of private parties own certain survey numbers in Dharavi.
